TM #268: The End
Feb. 13th, 2009 12:34 amIf Ray ever said the end Asher would win. If Ray threw in the towel and walked away, whatever crazy ideas Asher might have had about Ray’s true motives would have been proved right, however wrong they were. He didn’t want to give Asher the opportunity to watch him leave, shrug a shoulder and say I told myself so. It would be painless enough for the vampire to do, Ray figured, since he’d always claimed he wasn’t invested.
Only the stupid become attached to a carton of milk. And one thing Asher could never be found guilty of was being stupid.
Ray, he was stupid. Masochistic was the word of the week and it seemed only those who enjoyed having their heart trampled on became attached to a vampire who ignored the words I love you in favor of pointing out personality flaws. But Asher was a carton too, Ray would acknowledge that even if he didn’t, and somewhere along the line Ray had gotten a liking for this long-life milk.
So milk was milk and stupid was stupid but maybe the end didn’t have to be the end. Not wanting Asher to win wasn’t a good enough reason to keep a firm grip on the towel, neither was not wanting to lose. Waiting to be built up again was, for Ray. Asher made him soar and he made him plummet; he built him up only to knock him down again. But the waiting, however stupid, sickening as it was, it was enough. As long as Ray knew his blocks would go back up in time, nothing else really mattered.
When, if, the moment ever came when he doubted that they would, then…he would make sure he had enough self-respect left to switch to soy.
